Continuing this unusual trend of posts about Korean guys and guitars… I’d like to introduce you all to Sam Geunjin Kang. He’s a KoreanAmerican singer/songwriter who we first heard this past summer. Wes and I attended an Asian American acoustic concert run by a great organization called Kollaboration, and Sam was one of the performers. Instantly, his vocals, his energy, and his lyrics stood out among the others.

After the show, one of his friends was apparently a fan of Wong Fu Productions, and she made an initial introduction, but it wasn’t until a few months later when we ran into each other again that we were able to talk. He’s a really cool guy, just loving his music and wanting to share it with others. And now, I’d like to share it with you all. Here’s his first released song which I have on repeat.
Â
He’s literally just starting out, a very important time for every artist, so we definitely wanna show him support. Which is why I’m inviting you and any of your friends to his release party THIS Friday in Los Angeles. We’ll be there to enjoy his live performance (he’s great live) and just hangout. Also the first 10 guest of ours will receive a free copy of the CD. Just mention “Wong Fu Productions” at the door. Â The first 30 CDs will be $5 so get there early too.

Geunjin’s CD Release Party
Friday, December 19th, 2008
Vision Art Hall
505 S. Virgil Ave. (3rd Floor)
Los Angeles, CA 90020
8PM (All Ages)
$10
Here’s one more listen to him. “Shots and Beer” the song he performed at the concert. His mix of rapping a story with guitar, with singing his own hooks just gives me chills. Makes me super jealous, haha. A collaboration could be the future. Why does it seem like all Korean guys can sing…and rap. =P Shoutout to Dustin, his current manager, for supporting WF over the yrs.

i’d so love to attend. But LA is too far for me. I’m closer to berkeley and sacramento. I wish I could go down there though. It’d be awesome to meet you guys in person. And also see this new and upcoming artist make it big.

I love Sam Kang!! I fell in love with him when he performed at Kollab 8. I already planned on going there on Friday to support him. Now you guys will be there too. Double the awesomeness

i’m not a big fan of this kind of soft rap guitar whatchamacallit music, but he’s got a lovely singing voice. his tone reminds me a little of john legend. or matthew santos, the guy who sang in lupe fiasco’s “superstar”.
and come on guys…i’m sure there’s plenty happening in your local indie scene! even malaysia has pretty decent local artists and we’re not exactly a culture that encourages the arts much.
