Back to back entries about concert shows! Wow, so excite.
This Saturday we’re attending a special event called Kollaboration. It’s an annual talent show that was started by a great guy named PK several years ago and this coming weekend is the 9th one. The organization was kind enough to invite us as VIP guests, even though we were already planning on going to support, but we’re looking forward to a great show. A couple of our buddies are going to performing/competing (they’re technically going to have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes based on judges), David Choi and Paul Dateh. Oh, and there’s another majorly huge guest artist that’s going to be performing…
BOA. Yeah, for realz. For those that aren’t really into Asian music…Boa is like, the Britney Spears of Asia. I sorta feel like I’m not qualified to write about her as some other more knowledgeable fans <cough> Wes <cough>…but I do know that she’s a huge star, been selling out stadiums for years, can speak a ton of languages, and is about to try to break into the US. Check out her single. Think she can do it? I’m hesitant to believe, but, I definitely hope so.
Today we had a meeting with a young lady who is conducting a study for SAG (Screen Actors Guild) to see if the Asian American market is worth targeting (SAG is THE actors union. All official casting goes through them) They realize that there’s little to no casting of AAs in TV and film (3% of all casting is AA…seriously) so this study is being done to find out if having AAs casted in shows and movies actually makes a difference to AA viewers. We were interviewed and asked about our experiences seeing that most of our audience happens to be AA (a long conversation that might come in another entry), but we spent a pretty long time just talking about what needs to change not only in society, but also w/in ourselves to make a difference.
Events like Kollaboration, like International Secret Agents, like our tours…are all our efforts to prove that we care, and we’re willing to try to create change as long as we can get the support from those watching and listening. I figure if you’re here reading this…we know that we have your support, and that means so much to us. Thank you, really.
See you Saturday? Tickets here.

Haha, Wes.
I remember filling out that survey! I’m really glad that they are doing this; obviously I can’t speak for all Asians, but I definitely have more of an incentive to watch/listen to something if I know that Asians are present. It’s just kind of cool seeing “yourself” be in mainstream media.

I’m not really into “Eat you up”, but I’ve been following BoA’s singing career, she has definitely improved greatly over the years. Awesome performer!

Kollaboration is an awesome show, I always watch the segments on Youtube.
As for the SAG study, BRAVO that they are finally doing something like this (and shame on them for not thinking of it earlier)! I seriously hope that something comes out of it. They may not realize how important having a diverse cast is to movies and television. As a non-asian, I would totally go to a movie with a predominantly or completely Asian cast. Because Asian people are people too! And have normal and abnormal lives outside of kung fu, anime, and feudal China just like the rest of us! I think more Asian presence in the media in general (and American media in particular)is a boon for not just Asian Americans, but everyone else, minority and non-minority alike. Okay, group hugs, Care Bears, and happy rainbows!!! End PSA.
Oh, P.S. – So mad (yet happy) that Passion is performing at ISA SF!! Darn PA for being thousands of miles away. I <3 him.

wahh can’t believe BoA’s gonna be at kollaboration!
it’s definitely gonna be an awesome show, hope you guys have fun!
February 18, 2009 at 2:38 am
Sigh. I couldn’t agree more. The AA community definitely needs more representation in the media/entertainment. In all aspects including music, film, television.
BTW BOA’s booking contact info is impossible to find. How is she gonna get famous when its so hard to book her for a show. -.-
Have fun at Kollaboration! Should be a sick show.
Wongfu FTW

Woah. That’s like Meanix the Phoenix.
Lucky you guys! VIP and everything. Definitely deserve it. And the support you’re getting.
Wong Fu Rep!
