For those that just check our blog, but not our actual website…we released Part 3 of “Up In Da Club” yesterday. Totally on time too. Anyway, in this episode Evan gets a dance lesson from Lotus. I played Lotus… and yeah, I used to be a dancer.

I wasn’t like Lotus, I swear…I wasn’t “cool” enough to be like him, and definitely wasn’t a good enough dancer to be all cocky about it, but yes, when I was in college I was on a hip hop dance team called “Ascension”. I was on it all four years of school, definitely learned a lot, definitely shaped my time in college, definitely had a lot of fun. Since then though, I haven’t danced at all, and I do miss it a lot. Even worse, I’ve definitely lost a few steps and wouldn’t be able to keep up with all the crazy awesome dancers out there these days. There were a lot of camera tricks and special effects used in the new short to make it look like I sorta knew what I was doing.
Ascension was a great team. We competed, did shows, made music videos. Wes and Ted even got involved! They were honorary members. The team is still there at UCSD today, so lookout for them if you ever go.
Sigh to think I used to be able to move like this… (see if you can spot me)
The opening picture is from this performance in 2006.
Anyway, enough showing off and reminiscing about the glory dayz. I think it’s really because I do miss it. I sometimes think it’d be really fun to teach a class around here. Nothing crazy since I’m not “hip wit it” anymore, but beginner stuff? Anyone wanna sign up? I promise I won’t be like Lotus.
Sorta on the same topic…Do you wanna be in FM’s next music video? Our buddies Far*East Movement are shooting their new mv this Sunday (tomorrow) and they want YOU in it. First 50 to show up get their new album “Animal” free. More info here.
Alright, lesson over. See you next week.
PS: Parts 1 and 2 are on YT now for easier sharing with friends! Pass it along

LOL, whoa, what?! You were in Ascension?! I probably saw you perform back in the day at Fusion! My cousin was on 220 and Cultureshock around the same time. Good stuff!

KYAHH!!! PHIL!!! <3_________________<3 I didn’t know he could dance… I just thought he was really silly and funny. But Ted and Wes are really silly and funny too. You three belong together… ahem.
Does anyone know the name of the song that was used in the second video around 3:20-ish?

I have a somewhat strange question?
If anyone knows, whats the shoe that Lotus is wearing? I really want a pair of those.

February 8, 2009 at 7:24 pm
hahah yeah I see that too, it’s the Digg widget on the lower right loading up
February 8, 2009 at 6:42 pm
is it just my computer, or is there a subliminal message telling us to “digg” it popping up in the top left every time i go to the blog home page? it comes and goes really fast. oh no! i must digg it!

I have a question that’s always been on my mind for ages.
How’d you learn to do this stuff in high school before you joined Ascension?

This entry proves that dance should not be viewed with one still photo (that picture looks funny, more like constipation) — videos are the way to go.
I loved part 3, and was that a Stephen Chow reference I spotted from King of Comedy when Phil was literally on Evan? Coincidence?
Phil, beginner’s dance class sounds like a great idea, you could be like a Jedi master, teaching people about dancer’s insight. May the dancer’s insight be with you.

i miss you guysss

February 7, 2009 at 8:32 pm
amazing productions!
i used to forward ascension videos to my batch cheerleaders (in my uni, cheerleading isn’t exactly the sport it is in the states…it’s for fun) to give them ideas for dance moves.
your moves were a little too “chim” (deep or difficult, in hokkien) for them though, me thinks!
February 7, 2009 at 8:21 pm
@phil: if you actually have a hip hop workshop for beginners, i’d definitely consider moving to the states to take it from you haha i’m sure it would be fun….but warning, i’m even worse than Evan haha. Anyhow the new short is awesome! and i’m looking forward to new cuz spencer…
February 7, 2009 at 7:51 pm
