I miss Aaliyah

August 26, 2009 Posted in Music

The singer Aaliyah died yesterday (8/25) 8 years ago, in 2001. She was one of the first female artists I was a fan of (and had a major crush on, heh), starting late in middle school. I remember thinking she was so pretty, had such a nice voice, and could dance, and did a movie with Jet Li (“Romeo Must Die”). Everything I was looking for in a girl =)

I wonder how many of you reading remember her when she was around. Music was changing then, and she was a bridge.  I’d like to believe that if she were still around today, she’d still be making great music and charming the world as she did when she was alive. Her songs hold some pretty important spots in my memory, bringing me back to some nice places when I hear them. R&B isn’t the same w/out her. Above is one of her major hits (I remember trying to learn the dance in the mv). Below is her last (made after she passed) RIP Aaliyah.

  1. Nice post.. I can’t believe it’s been 8 years…
I miss her and her songs. Thanks for posting this.

    RIP Aaliyah.

  2. I love her music…i cried when i heard she died from a plane crash…

  3. I was stunned for a while when I heard she crashed.
Why isn’t Wong Fu Videos on iTunes? I’d rather pay for iTunes rather than having the DVD mailed over. The vblogs can be video podcasts. It’s another way of generating income. I’m pretty sure you guys will sell out.

  4. Every time I hear “Are You That Somebody”, I’m like, what’s with the baby? Like, who comes up with that? Hmm, let’s throw in a rooster crow here too while we’re at it.. But no, her music is good and it still lives on. I still can’t believe how young she was when she died :/

  5. aaahhhhh! Aaliyah! How weird…I didn’t even realize that it was around that time. My friends and I have been mentioning her a lot over the past couple of days! How weird…

I remember watching MTV music videos at 3am and seeing the breaking news flash across the bottom of the screen. That was a sad, sad time. :(

I like how you said, “she was a bridge” because she really was!! It’s hard to believe it was 8 years ago already. Her CDs are still in heavy rotation, for me at least.

*hugs* I feel your pain, Phil. I feel it.

  6. When I first heard her song “try again”, I was in elementary school and I really wanted to quit piano cuz it was hard, but because of her..it was like she was tell me not to give up haha~~ ^_^

  7. I was in the fourth grade when she died. I remember because we all had to bring in current events and “share and tell” and I talked about Aaliyah. :/

    RIP Aaliyah

  8. R.I.P Aaliyah

Like Phil said, R&B will never be the same…

  9. I love her song “miss you”… I cried the first i saw this same video… She is definitely remembered after all these years…

  10. R.I.P Aaliyah..

she was one of my inspirations..
