Yessss. Now associated with the Associated Press

083109APA few weeks ago a lady who writes for the Associated Press interviewed me (as I was representing “wong fu”) for her article about “young people and the future of movie theaters”. She was very nice and knowledgeable, and asked a lot of questions that I didn’t feel very qualified to answer, but I guess our experience as online content makers is very important to include since mainstream media is definitely making a shift to the internet, and conventional ways of receiving entertainment (television and movie theaters) must find a way to keep up and adjust. It’s a pretty interesting article, maybe for me since we’re in this field. If you’re interests lie in chemistry or accounting, you might not be so enthralled. But read the article HERE. My part of the interview is at the very end (save the best for last? or throw on the leftover crap at the end? haha).

For those of you who don’t know what the Associated Press is, it’s like, THE main source of news for most major publications. It’s the largest and oldest news organization in the WORLD, that shares photos, videos, articles to newspapers, television, radio, errthing. Everytime you read an article in a newspaper or newsite or blog and you see “AP” next to the credentials…yah, that’s them. =P

Click on to skip the rest of the article and just read Wong Fu’s mention.

The Internet also has provided new opportunities for young filmmakers, like 24-year-old Philip Wang, who are looking to break into the business.
He and his buddies started making short films in 2003 when they were students at the University of California, San Diego. Now their Wong Fu Productions Web site gets 5,000 hits a day from loyal fans who come to view their frequently updated collection of free short films. They make money by selling T-shirts and other merchandise related to their “brand” and from speaking on college campuses across the country.
While they certainly crave a box office hit, Wang still feels very loyal to Wong Fu’s online audience. And he only expects that audience to grow, especially as online video becomes part of everyday life for the up-and-coming generation of movie-watchers.
“I don’t think movie theaters will ever be obsolete,” Wang says. “But these kids are growing up on YouTube and with high-speed Internet. Someone’s going to have to create the supply for that demand.”
He muses at the unlikely thought that the Oscars would ever add a “Best Online Short Film” category.
But either way, he says, “Sooner than later, success online will translate to success in the mainstream.”

How’d I do? Any opinions about my part or the article in general?

Sidenote: We’ve been extremely blessed and lucky lately in the area of Press. The CNN feature a couple weeks ago, and now this mention from AP. It’s weird because it’s making me think… Hmm, is what we’re doing actually sorta real? haha. Many many thanks to Christine Clark who works at the UCSD alumni magazine who arranged this interview!!

Side Sidenote: I remember, when I was in middle and high school AP stood for “ASIAN PRIDE!!” haha, so silly.
