Trick-or-Treating is so not hot. – Phil

103109TedOMG Ted are you OK?!? Huh, oh wait… it’s fake. Phew. </endlamejoke>

So tonight is Halloween. November’s Eve. Just wanted to send all you readers haUNTeD WiisHH (tried to make that read spooky, but just ended up looking like an AzN teen is typing). You might wonder what Wong Fu dressed up as, assuming we have plans tonight… should there be any, we’ll let you see some pictures. =) trick_or_treating

But the main event of the night is Trick-or-Treating right? Not saying that I do it (though I wish we were still allowed to), but now the roles have changed, and I’M the one answering the door to give out candy to all the little kids dressed up as Optimus Prime and Dora the Explorer. The thing is, I’m actually not bitter that I can’t partake in the free candy hedonistic gluttony. I actually enjoy being the giver and seeing all the families come by. BUT, the sad thing is… not that many people come by our house in this neighborhood. Last year I stayed home excited to give out candy… but only 10 families rang the doorbell. Needless to say, I was quite disappointed. We’ll see how many show up tonight. The sun is setting, so it should be starting soon.

Now, regarding the low attendance, is it the same in your neighborhoods? Is trick-or-treating becoming less popular? Or is it just my area? I remember when I was a kid, it was a huge deal and there’d be TONs of ppl on the streets. (But I also remember seeing the tooth fairy back then, so really, my memory is probably not reliable?)

If trick or treating has indeed lost popularity… what do you think caused it? Too many crazies out there? A new generation of overly paranoid parents? Or less homes participating… like my Dad. He’s at home tonight by himself. I called him up and asked him what he was gonna do, did he have candy? He said he was gonna do what he did last year, turn off all the lights and act like no one was home. Worked then. haha. Nice dad. Nice.

So most likely you’ll be reading this after Halloween. How was your trick or treating experience (from either side of the door)?

Halloween this year was really depressing considering how wonderfully colorful it used to be, I mean I live on one of the main streets in my very, very, small town and usually my family has had to have some of us waiting in the car waiting for when the bowl would run out. I still remember when the houses were dressed in cobwebs, spiders, wicked witches of the east and west, but this year it was so still and silent that when the wind blew and some of the older houses gave a creek it was, for the first time, creepy. When the sun was just setting is when the little kids came out and a little later there were a few older kids but that was it and we had almost the entire bowl left. Later that night some ladies came around with plastic bags in one hand and a stroller handle in the other. I do blame the economy but I also know that most of the kids are older and in high school so they were all out somewhere or working on a research project which every English class had except for AP lit. (AP lit had an essay due and everyone in that class procrastinates). It’s sad but true.

i was going to be swine flue this yr…a pig with wings…swine flew…get it? anyhow…turns how it’s inapporpiate! LOL!

I honestly don’t remember the last time I went trick-or-treating before this year, so I can’t say much about the crowd. This year I went in costume with my little nephews. The younger one is 1 yo, so when he got too tired to walk to the door (he stayed with my sister) I’d trick or treat for him.

Fortunately, no one seemed to notice how old I was (will be 24 soon ahahah). I’m guessing I can still pass for under 18?

  4. Jamie Rae says:

So this year my friends and I planned to go trick or treating. but we ran out of time and all of the houses stopped giving out candy around 10 pm. X(. The whole reason why it took so long is because my friends had asked me to make a full course meal for halloween but it took longer than expected to make 8 different dishes when I started at 7 pm. XP So that was mostly my fault there. I should have left earlier from work.

But as for trick or treaters coming to my house. Ever since I moved to my house in ‘97 we’ve only gotten about 10 trick or treaters. My house is located in a court so not many people think about going into the dark and scary court at night. Plus one year when we did go all out. And decorated the house and got in costumes to scare on coming trick or treaters we scared the little kids a little too much. No purposely though.

But the main real reason why I think no one wants to take their kids or let their kids go out and get candy is:
    1. Most parents come home from a long day at work and want to rest.
    2. With all the kidnapping, killing, pedophiles and stuff out there parents don’t want to endanger their children.
    3. With how the economy is going right now some people are trying to just cut corners where ever they can
    4. And lastly, a lot of the kids now are too lazy to go out and get stuff on their own. Most of them learned the trick to getting candy without having to get out and get it. Which is convince the parents that they should give out candy and then take the candy from that. XP

Haha ur dad sounds like a typical asian parent like my mom :D
she always tell my family to turn off the lights and ignore the bells.
HEHE but anyways even if my lights were on, no one came to ask candy. How sad :[

  6. Jennifer says:

Yeah. i was excited to give out candy and see all the cute costumes kids had on but nobody would come into our neighborhood since we were the only house with the lights on and handing out candy. We only had like 6 families come by, including my little cousin. haha Its so sad to see that not many people are participating in Halloween anymore. =[

  7. Olivia says:

    Yeaahh.
It’s like Halloween is not a big deal anymore :P
My friend and I went trick-or-treating…not because we wanted to, but because it was apart of this picture scavenger hunt, and candy was extra points :) anyways, It used to be really fun when I was a kid.
Hahhaa omgsh my parents do the exact same thing! Hilarious.

  8. Lauren says:

I live on a big street, so no one really coems around here, but generaly, there are a lot of trick or treaters in my area. There’s thi specific hotspot where all teh lil kids go cuz its like a bunch of dead ends and their parents chat and wait at the openings of the streets while their children ring door bells.
This year, i was on both sides of the door. Rather than going ot a party that i was supposed to go to, i went home early after like 3 hrs of going around/chillin to pass out candy. Like 4 ppl cme (after 9/10pm) and yeah, i got the idea since i was lil that no one likes it around here lol

i hope u got to see some cool costumes though lol
    at elast funny ones!
    i was a porcelain doll…

I’m 18 and I’ve NEVER MISSED trick or treating before until this year. I love going door to door, asking for candy in my costume. I guess I never really grew up? But last year, one of the people passing out candy questioned my friend.. asking us “aren’t you a little bit old for trick or treating?” I was just going to say.. its not like you ran out of candy or will run out of candy. the truth is.. I think most kids don’t have parents to go trick or treating with OR most of the time.. halloween is on a school night so. I dont’ know. kids have too much homework?? but i just know its true that there arent as much people going out to trick or treat anymore which is ashamed.. because halloween was my favorite holiday as a kid

  10. Lina says:

I went trick-or-treating this year, costume-less, and 18years old. I went with my friend’s little brother, so it didn’t look too creepy. I mean, the people that truly enjoy Halloween won’t mind giving out candy to older kids who barely look different (especially since most of the time people end the night with bowls of candy still filled). I still love trick-or-treating, but i agree. i feel like most kids these days are either thinking that they’re too cool to go trick-or-treating, or they’d rather just sit at home doing nothing… alone. kind of sad.

  11. Tee says:

Halloween is less popular these few years because there were news reports about how people were sneaking in razorblades and lacing candy. Parents basically decided that their kids were too precious to be cut up and drugged out.

  12. Michelle says:

halloween is still very popular…well at least where i live!
i ran out of candy to pass out after an hour and a half…
the younger kids is what makes halloween fun…cuz they’re just so cute!
i think the older kids think they’re too cool for halloween nowadays.
where as i think that you’re never too old for candy!

  13. C says:

My brother and I was just talking about this. This year there was only 4 people that came to our house. I do wonder why kids dont trick-or-treat anymore. I remember when I was a kid we used to trick-or-treat and had garage bags of candies! Not kidding too. lol. Maybe me and my siblings just over did it, but I just loved it as a child. I am 26 years old now and I guess I did loved it so much that I actually I didnt stop until I was actually 20 years old! hahaha

  14. Kudo says:

I’m 17 and i’m a senior in high school but i went with my cross country friends, I was never that into going but as i grew up my friends always insisted with me going so I went, but it’s true there aren’t as many kids around as the past years. I live in Simi valley, and I only say a few families out there. Although I was over in my friends rich neighborhood where every house was decorated I only say like 10 families walking around. It’s so sad how some people have to ruin traditional stuff for the younger generation, cuz when i was younger I remember the streets being over crowded with kids.

  15. Jayfer says:

Halloween is fun when you go to haunted events and/or parties. I went to California’s Great America’s Halloween Haunt with like 6 mazes and even more scare zones. They just walk up to you and breathe on you. They go all out though; their make up is hella visible. It’s fun going with people who get scared easily, gives you something to laugh about. You should go to the Haunt next year, Phil! aand everyone else! :D

  16. Freya143 says:

I was handing out candy tonight as well and I have SOOO much candy/chips left over (more kids were out last year).
Halloween definitely isn’t as popular anymore. I remember going trick-or-treating as a kid and there would be tons of kids/parents on the streets.
I saw something interesting last night though, I saw parents DRIVING their children from house to house (I live in a cul-de-sac, so not much driving is required). Whatever happened to enjoying some nice fresh air and a spending some quality time walking around w/ your parents?

  17. JD says:

Halloween is still very much alive here in the San Fernando Valley. And when I mean alive, I mean, not only little kids, but some people you’d guess they were around 25’sh if not older. In fact, around here, you have vans that normally fit only eight people unloading ≈ 13/14 people.

However, I will admit that this year, they may have died down in some areas due to many lurking variables. Two main one’s of which are Flu season, and of course, the economy. I can tell you right now, that although I normally hand out candy, this year I decided not too; too expensive — sorry kids. But, prior to my leaving the house for some dinner, my entire block was completely filled with children.

  18. Lingy says:

    Halloween scares me :-(

  19. SoupyTwist says:

My neighborhood has died down for the amount of trick or treaters as well. When I was a little kid, there were tons of trick or treaters. But most of the kids were all around the same age, so we all grew up together basically, and a lot of the other people were senior citizens. So I think as the years went on, and fewer kids wanted to go trick or treating in our neighborhood, more people just started turning off all the lights, resulting in a never ending circle of less and less trick or treaters. And all the kids who still want to trick or treat find out about other neighborhoods that have a lot of kids, give out a lot of candy, or have the best candy, and everyone flocks over there.

I’m a senior in high school and I still went trick or treating last night (thought not in my neighborhood), and I’m proud of saying that. It seems that high school is the last time you have an excuse to go trick or treating, and actually grab candy. A lot of people who give out candy don’t seem to mind if you’re an older kid and asking for candy. Sometimes, they even like it more. They laugh a lot more since you actually get their jokes or you say jokes. They’re able to carry out a nice conversation with you. I dunno, at least in my experience it was like that.

  20. Annie says:

Totally agree. Used to be so huge and exciting from both sides of the door…not so much anymore. It’s not only your neighborhood. Whatever the reason is, I just feel sad for the kids of the next generation to not be able to experience the same holiday excitements as we had.

So did you guys dress up? Do share! :)

  21. Steffie Chan says:

Yeah, Halloween has definitely died down from what it was years ago. There were so few people out collecting candy. My friends and I trick or treated for a bit, but got bored after a while so we ended up watching scary movies at my house.

I think a big thing that’s affecting participation this year is the H1N1 virus. The Toronto area has been having a huge wave of scare lately because we had a boy recently die from it.

  22. Sandy says:

I don’t think it’s gotten less popular per say, but that kids now days trick-or-treat at malls or designated, community-sponsored vendors/stores. Parents feel that it’s safer if their kids are getting candy from businesses rather than individual homes. The only exception to this would be the upscale neighborhoods where the very wealthy put on lavish house displays and the kids will actually bus over there to go trick-or-treating.

Sadly, trick-or-treating is not what it use to be. Kids now days are such pansies with their plastic slides, lead-free playgrounds, and now designated areas of pre-approved trick-or-treating venues.

  23. BEAU VANG says:

YEP, HOLLOWEEN WAS DEAD A T MY PLACE TO. IDKY THOUGH, I LOVE HOLLOWEEN, I STILL WENT TRICK OR TREATING THIS YEAR AS THE COOKIE MONSTER, AND AS I WAS WALKING AROUND I SAW NOT A LOT OF KIDS WALKING AROUND, AND ONLY A MAXIUM OF 10 HOUSE’S (MAYBE MORE ) GIVING OUT CANDY THIS YEAR. I LOVE HOLLOWEEN !, I LOVE DRESSING UP AS A HERO, MONSTER, AND RECIVE FREE CANDY ! (THE BEST). MAYBE NEXT YEAR HOLLOWEEN WELL BE BETTER (HOPEFULLY), BUT I DOUBT IT.

  24. Donna says:

I don’t think anyone came by in my neighborhood. When I was grocery shopping for hot pot, I saw alot of kids and teenagers going to treat-or-treat at the stores though. I guess they think it’s safer.

  25. Nancy says:

aw. yea i live in a neighborhood where almost NO ONE hands out candy. but this year me and my brothers went out with my nephew his neighborhood and it wuz pretty awsome there! you should still go trick or treating!!!! i saw some adults out there trick or treating!

  26. Geena says:

Halloween pretty much died down this year :/
I remember seeing SO many people out, but this year it was mainly teenagers (including my friends and I, haha) and like 5 families going out to get candy. Only a few houses actually gave out candy though in my town D:
At least at the houses that DID give out candy gave out a lot since no one was coming by xD

  27. Lilly^^ says:

So, I think they don’t trick or treat anymore, they’re doing something different. At least where I live, some 10 year old kids hit the bottle instead of collecting candies. And also me, or my friends ( I don’t drink too much.I’m Asian, I can’t drink too much xD) are just walking down the streets and keep asking ppl who are over 18 if they can drink with them. That’s really fucked up – not kidding. I hate it. And this halloween sucked … ain’t fun at all.
I think trick or treat can be fun, if you start messing around with people.^^ :)
