Last week, during dinner at one of our tour stops, the three of us were discussing whether Pikachu is a male of female pokemon. The whole time I thought he was a dude, but that might be because I’m a dude. In any case, I decided to use a lifeline and phone a friend. By that, I mean ask all the knowledgable people on twitter haha.
I never got a chance to thank everyone for all the answers. I definitely learned that Pokemon is still alive and strong in the minds of a lot of people haha. Anyway, I think the majority of the twittercrowd agrees that Ash’s Pikachu is a male. I thought I’d post some memorable responses I received. Funny stuff guys.

silly wes, pikachu is a species! they can be both.
(I am silly. Goodpoint!)

He’s definitely a male. Compare his tail to a female tale & Ash’s Buneary is a girl and has a crush on him. Hope that helped.
(Pokemon crush?! wtf)
TheSPAMi
If you’re talking about Ash’s Pikachu, I’m leaning toward male. He’s seen in a tux-thing before the pokerap/songs, right?
(Ohh yeaa. I remember that song. Silly Pokemon wearing clothes)
RayPajar
Pikachu is a boy because in the 1st 151 unless said, all pokemon were boys. Reason why, sex was added later
(Interesting trivia. Who knew..)
twnty7
According to this http://bit.ly/MtXaC Ash’s Pikachu is male.
(Wow. It’s like a real-life pokedex!)
blinktwice4y
whatever it is, i bet it’s delicious
(Hahahaha. NomNomnom..)
sharonyi
isn’t pikachu like a eunuch? LOL.
(That’s sad and sorta disturbing)
Ahhlekz
Ash’s Pikachu right? He refers to him as ‘boy’ in the series so unless Ash has it wrong o.O
(I specifically remember Ash saying “Boy” Good call)
hellopandreaa
Oh…wait, “a female Pikachu now has an indent at the end of its tail, giving it a heart-shaped appearance”. (Wiki)
(Wow. I had no idea. Interesting)
ghimghim
male! because he doesn’t have boobs!
(Some guys have boobs though. Manboobs are hot)
KCzeeSPAZ
I think Pikachu’s a girl cuz you know, you don’t see anything down there. . . .
(Anatomically, this makes sense..I think)
Question: Do you still follow the Pokemon series? I think the three of us liked it more when they were actually animal-like. Not crazy made up creatures. But that’s cool too. Gotta catch ‘em all!

I watched some episodes, but when I was younger I was a lot more into digimon. *digimon, digital monsters, digimon are the champions*

lol i know this is an old post but i just read it..
AWESOME right?
very funny
my friend told me that pikachu is a girl (to my surprise)
also, to top it off, she informed me that “pika” means “sparkly” in japanese (i think?) and that “chu” means “kiss”, so pikachu is really a girl pokemon named sparklykiss.
just thought i’d let you know xD
<3 luv!

I remember when I was a big time pokemon fan. Watched the show, played the games, and traded the cards. The first 151 were the best, the next 49(I think, can’t remember anymore) were good but the rest were really weird. I watched the first two seasons and watched a new one and was amazed how different everyone sounded. Ash’s Pikachu is a guy, the first season(the best) made it obvious(the costumes, Ash refering to Pikachu a a guy, some other stuff i can’t remember.) Team Rocket would crack so many jokes in the first season that I would understand till later in life.

Ash’s voice is done by a girl (LOL) and I think pikachu is a boy or that might be what he/she wants you to think…

Actually pikachu’s voice is done by a 36 year old japaneese woman… It’s a little creepy…….=]

This is a nerdy response to your posts from twitter…
RayPajar said that: “Pikachu is a boy because in the 1st 151 unless said, all pokemon were boys. Reason why, sex was added later”
Not true. There were gender difference in Pokemon since the beginning (insert awkward joke here). i.e. Nidoran was male, Nidorina was female. Their evolved forms also kept the gender distinction.

Yeah – there are so many Pokemon now. Did you know there are over 12 Pokemon movies? Oh dang! I was working on this huge Pokemon Carnival production this past year called Pokebooth – and I had to find out everything (Pokemon stores, theme parks… yeah there was a theme park, toys, games, history….) everything there was to know.
Check it out!

Interesting posts. I like to watch Pokemon every now and then, though I used to watch it every day. I just don’t have the time I used to. I never really thought about Pikachu’s sex. I presumed he was male due to the occassional references to boy during the cartoons. However, it does sort of make sense when you follow how they developed the character relationship between Ash and Pikachu. Regardless, I like the pair up and the stories that have been getting developed. I just wonder if Ash will ever make it to a Pokemon Master or if they will keep coming up with new pokemon to ensure he never makes it just so that they can keep extending the series? Time will tell. For the most part, the story line is still pretty fun to watch and it is good to share with the kids my wife and I try to help via foster care.

this is very interesting indeed..
November 16, 2009 at 8:25 pm
ahaha i always leaned toward male.
November 15, 2009 at 10:32 pm
Pokemon? o.o I was more into Sailor Moon…still kinda am.. ^__^;
November 14, 2009 at 11:51 pm
The first 151 (red, blue, yellow) were the best. Gold and Silver was okay, but after that the pokemon just started getting weird. Old school ftw XD
November 14, 2009 at 11:00 pm
Haha, Pikachu may be a male, but the person who dubs pikachu’s voice is a female.
check it out.

Well it depends if you’re talking about the show or the game. In the game Ash’s Pikachu was a girl, which really blew your mind if you paid attention to that kind of stuff. In the show, Pikachu was probably a boy, considering the costumes it wore in certain episodes.

I still like to watch pokemon every once and a while. But I really enjoyed it when they had the pokerap. That was an awesome series. XP

Conundrum finally solved.
I tweeted he was a male, too. Glad to see I wasn’t alone.
November 13, 2009 at 1:43 am
No lie. I cried in the 1st movie
But those days are long gone…
November 13, 2009 at 1:33 am
I completely stopped watching the show after Misty and Brock were not part of the main cast. However, I did buy Ruby not so long ago on ebay and I have to say, it is an awesome game.
For more random stuff, Pikachu’s voice actor is actually a voice actress

ah the good old pokemon days.
i remember link battling friends at recess and church ahaha.
I agree, pokemon was a lot better when they were animal like. First original 151 was the best and a few after that was cool.
November 13, 2009 at 12:10 am
ahahahahha
halarious
i watch some of the new episodes but its just not as good as the first couple seasons
November 12, 2009 at 11:40 pm
nope, i didn’t follow pikachu. the only animate i was into was sailormoon
November 12, 2009 at 5:48 pm
Lol, I think I have to agree with Ash’s pikachu being a male. We had a dog awhile back (who was a boy) that was named Pikachu…due to my little brother’s obsession with Pokemon. (okay me too ..a little bit XP )
November 12, 2009 at 5:34 pm
Haha nice blog. Haven’t followed Pokemon since the days of Red and Blue on Gameboy. But I hear it’s still pretty popular out there. I miss being a kid again lol
November 12, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Oh, Pokemon. Those were the days…
