Well here it is, after a few months holding this back, here’s our newest music video for the talented Sam Geunjin Kang and his song “Red Light”. Here’s a little bit of background on how we chose the song and style.
So you might notice that this video is a bit different from our past work. This was intentional. When we were deciding on a song off the Sam’s album we had a lot to choose from. He had a lot of different moods and topics in his music. “Shots and Beer” was about old friends growing up and would have had a great story. “Sunday” was about meeting girls in church, which would have had a really funny video to match. “Dreams” as I’ve written is my favorite because it is the most thoughtful and about family.
STYLE
We ended up choosing “Red Light” because we felt that with all the other songs, we would be making a video that had similar “cute” “aww” emotions and visuals that we’ve had in past videos. We don’t have anything against that, but I guess we just wanted to try something new… and something that was a little more grown up, and a little more cool, maybe even sexy? haha. “Red Light” gave a good soundtrack for a video that could have this look and feeling. So I guess you could say this music video was our attempt to be “grown and sexy” haha. It’s still not as edgy as it could be, but hey, we have middleschoolers watching our stuff apparently. =P
CREW/LOCATIONS
This video was made with no crew. Once again, just wes, ted, and myself behind the scenes with the camera, holding bounce boards and work lights, and running all around yelling directions. Sam did find help through his friends offering locations for us, like the church where the performance shots were done (one of the nicest church settings I’ve ever seen), and the bar and apartment. The apartment we used actually belonged to the one of the bar’s managers, James Rhee, who let us use both. Super nice places.
BUDGET
There was also no budget (minus some parking and some drinks), as you just read, just pulling a lot of favors from friends. I’d say that what we created looks like it cost a lot more than $50, haha. Don’t you think?
CAST
Everyone in the video was a friend of Sam’s. We like making videos w/ friends and not necessarily actors. It’s more fun this way. The main girl in the video… that’s Sam’s girlfriend. =)
Overall this was a really great project. I’m actually very proud of this one and I hope you guys enjoy the quality and intentions behind this video. Please spread it around if you like it, and definitely check out more of Sam’s music. Thanks!

I liked this mv alot! Just like you said it is a different style and feel, but it definitely matched. I liked how the there were shots of Sam singing throughout the song because the style of the song makes me think that it’s supposed to be that way =] kindof a country-singing-feel lol probably from his voice. And the black and white theme added to the effect of the song very well too =]

I loved this music video! And I wondered whether Sam and the main girl were going out. And I was right. The chemistry was right there!
This mv makes my day!

The video was too…jumpy. I’m sure it’s a style/effect thing but too much of it will cause the Blair Witch effect which is what I think happened here. By the end of the video, I felt a bit nauseous. Still, I love the work you guys do!

I like the new style. The still shots looked beautiful (: I would’ve liked to see the colors in the mv as well

I’m no expert, but as far as my personal taste goes, here’s a bit of hopefully understandable, constructive criticism:
I really loved the parallel camera shots. Using the same camera movements and filter for following both Sam and his girlfriend seem really good at first, but then once he leaves the stage to go meet up with her and the camera follows both of them while still cutting to him singing on stage– I think I would have preferred either a clearer difference between his stage performance and their meeting or more cohesiveness between the two? Maybe you intentionally wove it together, but it still didn’t feel quite cohesive (lighting/more stable close-ups on them vs more sweeping shots of him singing ). It may have been too predictable to cast their meeting in red lighting, but maybe color or different cinematography to have a clearer exaggeration between the two settings?
Anyway, nicely done

Awww, i honestly wanted to comment on how much i loved the video. But something else caught my eye, and i think we rarely see this:

Wow… that’s a really great MV. You guys did a great job and I love the black and white. It gives the MV a different feel with the song. This felt like a more grown up and sexy video, but not over the top like other MVs that are out there. You guys played it really well. Great job and keep up the great work!!! Love you guys!

Saw this a while back on the live feed from one of your tour stops. Much nicer watching it from YouTube instead of on a blurry webcam!
Great work. And wow, Sam’s girlfriend is a stunner.

And a question: What font do you use in the title screen?
December 10, 2009 at 5:10 pm
LOVE this
btw, i think you guys put the wrong link for his youtube site in the side bar of this video…
i’m pretty sure it should be “http://www.youtube.com/user/GeunjinMusic” and not “http://www.youtube.com/geunjin”
just saying… ;]

I first saw this at ISA and I was blown away with how different it is from your usual work.
I absolutely love that you guys decided to take an edgier approach.
Might I add, Wong Fu shouldn’t shy away from doing sexier stuff. More edge! More sex! [But definitely more cute too, haha]
