Anime Expo was animezing – Phil

Anime Expo was this past weekend in Los Angeles! The last time we went was in 2007 and it was super fun. This year we were given a few industry passes to go check it out (thanks Kimberly!) so on Saturday we headed over to the LA Convention Center.

First I should point out that Wes and I are not anime SUPER fans. I mean, when we were younger we kept up with a few series, Wes probably more than me, so we have our favorites and we’re some what proficient in anime culture. With that said, we were just going there more to partake in the atmosphere than to go look for special toys/dvds/or panels.

While we wanted to dress up in some cool cosplay, we just didn’t have enough time, so the morning of we put together some impromptu costumes. Wes did a really good job, cutting up and drawing on some tshirts of his to be a slimmed down Totoro. He was very proud of his bag of seeds.

Me? There wasn’t any character that I could dress up as on such short notice…so I just punched out some cheap sunglasses and made a couple anime expression accessories.

The anime tears.

And anime frustration…vein? point? What is that, I always see it but never really knew what it was. I was gonna do a sweat drop but ran out of time.

When we got to the expo, it was just this…anime/comics explosion. Even driving towards, we could tell we were getting close because of all the cosplayers walking around downtown LA. It was cool. Funny… but cool.

We spent most of our time just walking around the convention floor, admiring all the amazing costumes. Some were just, unbelievable in detail and functionality. And of course, a lot of cool makeup and hair. We took video, so you’ll see it in an upcoming WFWeekend. We also ran into some fans, all of whom had better costumes than us =P Here’s a few of them who posted their pics on our facebook page.

We had a great afternoon, and it was really neat to see all these enthusiastic fans of this culture come out. Again, even if you’re not a big fan or anime, it’s still cool to go and people watch. Next year you should definitely go check it out.
